Evolutionary history of threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus spp.) in British Columbia: insights from a physiological clock

چکیده
Geologic and allozyme evidence suggests that threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus complex) in low-lying southwestern British Columbia lakes were founded during two incursions of marine sticklebacks after the retreat of the Pleistocene glaciers (the double-invasion hypothesis). We used the salinity tolerance of embryos, measured as hatchability in salt water, to establish the relative order of freshwater invasion by marine sticklebacks and to test the double-invasion hypothesis. Limnetics and an anadromous population hatched nearly equivalent numbers of young in salt water'as in fresh water, whereas benthics and one solitary freshwater population had low hatchability in salt water. We also found that eggs from freshwater populations were larger than those from marine populations and limnetics had smaller eggs than benthics and the solitary population. These results support the double-invasion hypothesis and suggest a trend of increasing egg size with increasing time spent in

Evolutionary history of an adaptive radiation in species pairs of threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus): insights from mitochondrial DNA
Species pairs of threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, co-exist in several lakes in the Strait of Georgia, southwestern British Columbia. One species, ‘benthics’ is robust-bodied and is morphologically and behaviourally specialized for benthivory. The other species, ‘limnetics’ is specialized for planktivory in open-water habitats of the lakes. We examined mitochondrial DNA restrictio...
متن کاملDivergence in thyroid hormone concentrations between juveniles of marine and stream ecotypes of the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)
Background: Hormones regulate the expression of multiple phenotypic traits. Therefore, divergence in hormone concentrations may lead to evolutionary changes in the coordinated physiological and behavioural traits that comprise an organism’s integrated phenotype. Adults of marine ecotypes of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) have higher concentrations of the thyroid hormone thyroxi...
متن کاملConspicuous Female Ornamentation and Tests of Male Mate Preference in Threespine Sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus)
Sexual selection drives the evolution of exaggerated male ornaments in many animal species. Female ornamentation is now acknowledged also to be common but is generally less well understood. One example is the recently documented red female throat coloration in some threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations. Although female sticklebacks often exhibit a preference for red male t...
متن کاملReversed brain size sexual dimorphism accompanies loss of parental care in white sticklebacks
Uncovering factors that shape variation in brain morphology remains a major challenge in evolutionary biology. Recently, it has been shown that brain size is positively associated with level of parental care behavior in various taxa. One explanation for this pattern is that the cognitive demands of performing complex parental care may require increased brain size. This idea is known as the pare...
متن کاملThe Evolutionary Biology of the Threespine Stickleback
Because the study of variability lies at the heart of evolutionary biology, species that exhibit considerable variation across their geographic range are of special interest to comparative biologists interested in understanding evolutionary patterns and processes at the species level. Few vertebrates match threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in the extent of geographic variation in...
